First Poetry Slam Competition of the Year!

On Tuesday afternoon, October 28, the poetry slam group traveled to Rambam Mesivta Yeshivah to participate in the first slam of the year. With Ms. Robinson's guidance, Fanya Donin headed the committee and Raquel Shalam, Zack Fernandez, and Merle Dweck performed their poetry. Members from Ms. Stein's creative writing class came as well to cheer on our poets. Each participant was to write one Free Verse style poem on the importance of Expression & Speaking Out. The other poem was to be a 'Terza Rima' on the topic of Unity/Achdut. We would like to congratulate Fanya for making it to the finalist round. We look forward to more upcoming slams at both SAR in November and one here on our home turf in December. Please email flatbushslampoetry@gmail.com if you'd like to participate in future slams.

First Yachad-Ohel Program of the Year!

This past Wednesday. Yeshivah of Flatbush held its first Yachad-Ohel program of the year. These programs are a great way for us, the students, to interact and have fun with people who have mental and/or physcial challenges. The students together with the Yachad and Ohel members paired up and kicked off the night with an exciting game of bingo followed by music videos and dancing in the auditorium. 

After a D'var Torah and other introductions we moved the party to the gym where we continued our fun night with singing, rikkidum, and a pizza dinner. It was an amazing night filled with smiles, laughs, and chesed. Thank you Rabbi Besser and the Yachad-Ohel commission for making this program possible. We can't wait until the next event!

Pathfinders Update: MAD About Jewelry Exhibition

Recently, a group of senior girls had the opportunity to experience a one-of-a-kind jewelry exhibition through our Pathfinders Program. These students had the chance to see contemporary jewelry on display at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) part of the NYU Women's Initiative. This event showcased over 50 of the world's most innovative studio and art jewelers. These students had the chance to speak with and learn from designers to get a better understanding of the jewelry field. Thank you to Mrs. Hanon for making this opportunity possible.

SGO Commission Fair 2014!

I never really knew how extensive and expansive the extracurricular activity offerings at Yeshivah of Flatbush were until I helped plan the annual Commission Fair with my fellow SGO members. It amazes me how many commissions and clubs there are and how many students enjoy getting involved. After a few weeks of hard work and planning the day finally came.

On September 30, 2014 the Yeshivah of Flatbush held its seventh annual Commission Fair to introduce students to the many different commissions, clubs, and teams available to students at Flatbush and to encourage them to sign up for those that interest them. Some of the commissions featured were Israel Activism, Eko Commission, Cooking for a Cause, Choices Commission, Tzedakah Commission, Mock Trial, STEM, Partners in Reading and many others. Every commissions board was nicer than the next. Every commissioner was so excited to get every single student involved. Many new exciting commissions were created this year, such as the Real Estate Commission where they will be bringing in successful realtors to educate students who have interest in Real Estate.

Seeing so many students so eager to get involved is such an inspiration to me and I think to everyone in the school. Flatbush students do not only focus on their schoolwork, they are also exceedingly involved in multiple extracurricular activities. The annual Commission Fair was a great demonstration of this.

Falcon's Nest Notes: Falcons Basketball Coach to be featured on Nachum Segal Network’s Court Report

With the pre-season well underway, and the Tishrei chagim in the rear window, the focus is quickly turning towards the start of the Yeshiva League Fall/Winter Athletic Season. Nachum Segal Network’s “Court Report” welcomes Flatbush Falcons Boys Basketball Head Coach Avi Borenstein to their Sunday night livestreaming broadcast slot on nachumsegal.com. Tune in to the “Court Report,” a Yeshiva League sports-based internet radio program, this Sunday night, 10/26, when JM in the AM sports reporter and “Court Report” host Elliot Weiselberg interviews Falcons Head Coach Avi Borenstein. As a veteran coach in the Yeshiva League, the head of the Falcons boys’ basketball program will be previewing the entire upcoming season of the Yeshiva League, taking a close look at both the JV and Varsity boys’ basketball competition, as well as providing some insight on the prospects for the Flatbush Falcons hoops programs this year. It is a great way to get ready for the excitement of a new season!

The hour-long program will air Sunday night, October 26, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm on nachumsegal.com and will encore on Tuesday night, 10/28, also from 7 pm - 8 pm. The Yeshiva League Sports Report on JM in the AM can be heard at 91.1 FM on the radio dial in the NYC area on Tuesday mornings at 7:20 am.

Falcon's Nest Notes: Optional Soccer Workouts Score Big Over Sukkot Holiday

A week and a half is a long time off for any team, so the coaches and players of the new Flatbush outdoor boys varsity soccer team did something about it. Coache Amzalag organized three non-mandatory practices for any team members in the Brooklyn area over the Sukkot holiday break. The practices were held in Marine Park, and using portable goals, the sessions proved to be both exciting and productive.

With 6 overall training sessions now under their belts, the boys are really starting to show considerable improvement. Every day, the players are enthusiastic in their efforts, growing both in skill and in tactical play. The focus on the practice pitch has been teaching the team to play intelligently, to control the ball effectively and to learn to use space efficiently in stretching out defenses and breaking down opponents. And, the coaches are in agreement that the team is definitely moving in the right direction.

The short inaugural season will get underway this Sunday, October 26, as the boys head south to take on Golda Och Academy in West Orange, NJ for their Flatbush debut. Game time is 10:00 am.

Sgt. David Abadie Speaks With Seniors About His Experiences in the Israeli Defense Forces

On Monday, October 6th the students of the senior grade had the opportunity to hear from Sergeant David Abadie. Sgt. Abadie, a former Yeshivah of Flatbush student, served in the IDF after his senior year of high school. He subsequently made aliyah. Abadie spoke to us about his experiences in the Israeli Defense Forces. Serving in the past two operations within Gaza, Pillar of Defense and Protective Edge, the lone soldier really had a story to tell. He mentioned how his experience as a soldier in 2008 was much different then his experience this past summer when he went in with the meluim, IDF reserves units. He also shared with us his experience in making aliyah to Israel and that at first, even though his whole past life was in New York, he knew he belonged in Israel. Students were able to ask Abadie any questions that they had during an extensive Q and A session. Thank you to the Israel Activism Commission for organizing this event. Thank you Sgt. Senior Council 2015 Trip to Nets Vs. Maccabi Tel-Aviv Basketball Game

The first trip for Seniors 2015, which took place right before the Sukkot vacation was a major success. The Senior Council 2015 organized a trip to the preseason basketball game between the Brooklyn Nets and the fan favorite of the night, the Maccabi Tel-Aviv, at the Barclays Center. The game itself was pretty even, ending with a 111-94 win for the Nets, but not without a fight from the Maccabis. The seniors enjoyed an aerial view of the stadium throughout the night, watching countless dunks, and some spectacular defensive plays by the Nets. What was truly heart warming was the outstanding support for the Israeli team surrounding us. Hundreds of Israeli flags were waving throughout the stands the entire night. Thank you to Mr. Galpert and of course to our Senior Council for organizing this amazing experience. This trip was the first of many more exciting ones to come during our senior year! ~Rochelle Tawil
