Yom Hazikaron 5774

Being in high school, we often think about our futures. Whether it's how we study for the SAT, what college we're going to be applying to or whether we want to spend the year in Israel, our options are endless. For Israeli students our age, all they think about is what unit they want to be a part of in the army and whether they'll make it out alive. On May 5th, Yom Hazikaron, Memorial Day the Yeshivah of Flatbush students and faculty remembered the Israeli soldiers who sacrificed their lives to insure the safety of the Jewish homeland and reflected on the many tragedies that have occurred. We had a moving assembly that started off with a moment of silence to remember all the soldiers who passed away this year. Mar Urim said the yizkor for fallen soldiers and lit a candle. Students who participated in the program spoke about previous wars and various terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of thousands of Israelis. It was very emotional watching those videos, knowing that they are just about our age. Special thanks to Dr. Gerber for organizing the entire day.

Throughout the day we had 24 students who stood as honor guards in the lobby. The total amount of killed Israelis since the beginning of the state of Israel is 23,169 people. May their memory be blessed. ~Rosie Ovadia
